Nokia has been whispering to telecom analysts for months about a “soon to be unveiled plan” to recapture their dwindling share of the smartphone market. Now it’s all too clear what that strategy is– “if you can’t innovate, then litigate.” Yes, I’m being a bit flip, but sadly there is more than a kernel of truth to Nokia’s “sue vs innovate” strategy. In a 9to5 Mac post today – Nokia takes gloves off – Johnny Evans writes;

Nokia has thrown a third punch at Apple as litigation between the two firms intensifies, the Finnish firm has this time asked the US Federal court to ban iPhone, iPod and MacBook imports into the US on strength of claims Apple is abusing Nokia patents.

Let’s hope the judge doesn’t pull an abdominal muscle laughing too hard at Nokia’s latest legal maneuvers.

Ironically, many have suggested that Nokia’s legal action is aimed at winning access to technologies patented by Apple (e.g. multi-touch on mobile). Apple has countersued claiming Nokia’s violation of 13 Apple patents. Yet the Espoo-based handset manufacturer will claim vigorously that they have plans to reinvent and reinvigorate their own smartphone offerings without reliance on Apple’s technology.

All Things Digital reporter, John Paczkowski, has a post today detailing Nokia’s new plans. Paczkowski quotes Nokia spokesman Rick Simonson “By 2011, our efforts will start producing results, as we will be at par with Apple and RIM in smartphones.” Read > more
