China Unicom has their new Wo Portal for delivery of value added services, including: news sites, video on demand, a mobile bookstore, and mobile TV (CCTV1-10). China Unicom has made no secret of their intention to build out their own app store (Wo Portal expansion or site to be named later?) to participate in the mobile applications bonanza. Now we’ve learned that China Unicom’s subsidiary Shanghai Unicom is experimenting with a new social networking site called Wan Jia Ying (translates to “Player Camp”). The new site will be an online platform through which Apple iPhone users can exchange information and share content. An executive with Shanghai Unicom denied rumors that “Wan Jia Ying,” which has been under testing since August, will become an application store platform. It’s more likely that the Wo Portal will be further developed to deliver new mobile apps/games.
When the China Unicom app store eventually opens its doors, it will work in conjunction with the Apple App Store — Two app stores open for China’s iPhone users. Happily, Apple’s China App Store and Unicom’s Wo Portal are both readily accessible via the official China Unicom iPhone (both the Wo Portal icon and App Store icon reside on the official iPhone).
