iPhonAsia has been speculating for months that at least one iPhone model for China Unicom will include WiFi. More specifically a chipset that supports the wireless LAN authentication and privacy infrastructure (WAPI)/WiFi stack. This combination was authorized on mobile phones in China after May of 2009.

Update – March 23, 2009: China Mobile’s CEO spoke to a reporter on Saturday, March 21, 2009. According to Wang Jianzhou, China Mobile’s talks with Apple have stalled, albeit “the door remains open.” This is no surprise as Apple is moving forward with China Unicom. Details > HERE (in Mandarin)
